The Lonely are More Likely to Believe in god

Study finds the god of the friendless

A study detailed in the February issue of the journal Psychological Science, shows that people who are lonely are more likely to believe in god, and the supernatural than those who are part of established social group. College undergraduates were shown clips from three movies to induce certain feelings. Those that saw a clip from “Cast Away”, a movie where Tom Hanks plays a man stranded on a topical island by himself where more likely to assign anthropomorphic traits to pets, electronic gadgets, and even cars. The people in the lonely control group also reported a stronger belief in god, angels, miracles, the devil, ghost and other supernatural phenomenon. “We found that inducing people to feel lonely made them more religious essentially,” said University of Chicago researcher Nicholas Epley. Epley plans to investigate the issue to see if anthropomorphizing pets or believing in anthropomorphized supernatural agents is what alleviates feelings of loneliness in the insolated. “There are health benefits that come from being connected to other people, and those same benefits seem to come from connection with pets and with religious agents, too,” Epley said. Epley didn’t mention the health effects of suicide bombers, honor killings, or the holy inquisition.

Church to protest at Heath Ledgers funeral

In Intolerance, religion on January 24, 2008 at 6:11 pm

Straight Brokeback Mountain star hated by all loving deity for portraying a gay man on film

Westboro Baptist Church members are planning a demonstration at Heath Ledger’s American funeral service to draw attention to their belief that Heath Ledger has joined the damned. “Heath Ledger is now in Hell, and has begun serving his eternal sentence there,” the Westboro Baptist announcement says. The group is famous for their anti-gay agenda and has lead over 34,000 protests to demonize the gay community. “You cannot live in defiance of God,” she said. “He got on that big screen with a big, fat message: God is a liar and it’s OK to be gay,” said Shirley Phelps-Roper of the Westboro Baptist Church.
The church also runs the hate mongering websites godhatesfags.com, godhatesamerica.com and others that condemn lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, Muslims, Roman Catholics and Jews as well as certain nationalities, according to Wikipedia.

Pope plans historic; deeply ironic dialoge of nonsense

In Irony, religion on January 16, 2008 at 11:31 pm

Muslim and Catholic Leaders to Meet

The Pope plans to meet with leaders of the Muslim community this spring in an effort thaw relations between the two faiths. Muslims world wide erupted in violent protest in September 2006, after the Pope quoted a medieval text that chastised Muslims’ propensity for violence. The Pope was quick to point out that the views from the medieval transcript were not his own, and that he was indeed quoting a historical text, but nevertheless the public rancor was already unleashed. In order to improve relations, the Vatican will host this dialog of faiths in the spring of 2008. While both faiths have horrible record on human rights and tolerance of others, the two camps are meeting to discuss those two issues among other no doubt ironic topics. One just hopes the “our god is better than your god” debate doesn’t grow too heated (indeed, they are both the one god of Abraham), as I would hate to see grainy footage of the Pope being decapitated pop up on the “internets”.
