Family Members Describe Murderer as a Loving Mother with a Strong Religious Upbringing

Melissa Huckaby, 28, is being held on murder and rape charges over the death of her 8 year old student, Sandra Cantu (pictured). Sandra went missing on March 27th which resulted in a large scale search effort by the city of Tracy, CA. It wasn’t until April 6th however, that Sandra’s dead body was found stuffed into a suitcase in an irrigation pond. The pond was only a few miles from a mobile park where both Cantu and Huckaby resided. Huckaby lived with her grandparents five doors from where Sandra and her mother lived. The little girl was a friend of Huckaby’s 5-year-old daughter, Madison, who will now be motherless. Police later announced that there is evidence that Melissa Huckaby raped her daughter’s playmate with a foreign object before murdering her.

The murderer Melissa Huckaby’s (pictured) family visited her at San Joaquin County Jail on Monday. Huckaby’s father Brian Lawless said the family took the time to pray together. One wonders what they prayed for, hopefully for the family of Sandra. Or maybe they asked god what part of his divine plan involved Melissa killing a little girl for what appear to be for the pleasure of it. Maybe they questioned the love of a deity that would allow someone so defenseless to be victimized in such a brutal fashion. I’d like to think that’s what they prayed about, but we all know they probably didn’t. More likely they asked for help with the ordeal they are about to face, rather than asking important ‘why’ questions.

On Easter Sunday, at the same church Huckaby had worked at as Sunday school teacher, her family gathered to offer the media the same short-sighted clichés we often hear in these situation. They described her as (shockingly), “a loving mother with a strong religious upbringing.” Her father said, “the young lady I see on film, that’s not my daughter,” clearly he must not have known her that well, or more likely was wearing blinders as our friends of faith like to do. “The allegations are so far outside what I know about my niece,” said Huckaby’s uncle, Brett Lawless. Brett went on to express doubts about the case against Huckaby, but to his credit added, “but we understand the police doing their jobs might have some probable cause.”

  1. How tragic.

    Yes, indeed, how tragic.

A slap in the face to those that still advocate that religious beliefs automatically mean a higher moral pillar.
