Legendary Physicist Has Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s disease)

Prominent physicist Stephen Hawking was rushed to a hospital today. Greg Hayman, Cambridge University head of communications “Professor Hawking is very ill, he is undergoing tests. He has been unwell for a couple of weeks.” I just attended ASU’s Origins Symposium in which Hawking was scheduled to give the keynote lecture. Stephen had to cancel however sighting illness. At the time I was upset, as I was really looking forward to seeing him in person, now I feel kind of like an ass. Professor Hawking is a personal hero of mine and I truly hope he is able to recover and return to his work. Hawking is best known for his work on black holes, the discovery of “Hawking Radiation” (says black holes melt away), and his classic book “A Brief History of Time”.

  1. A hero of mine too. The “Brief History of Time” one of the most influential books of my life and turned me on to pursuing Physics as a career.

    Best of luck to him.

  2. Yes me too. I moved to Arizona in 2003 and didn’t know anyone. I was so bored, I decided to read (something I never did at the time). I picked up A Brief History of Time off my brother’s book shelf and read it one sitting. I didn’t understand much of it at the time, but I was so impressed that someone could, I had to know more. The next day I changed my major to physics. 🙂 Thanks for reading!

  3. Similar story. My grandfather left it for me as part of his science/philosophy book collection when he passed away.

I tried reading it then but got nowhere, then I tried again after doing a bit of high school physics and it just seemed to open up the world for me.

Hey you on thinkatheist too. nice.

  4. Yup, also on Atheist Nexus. 🙂
