Church Ordains a Sex Offender

Worst Idea Since Mixing Guns and Booze

The potential for jokes aside, a sex offender as a minister (a position of authority over children) is an idea so bad, so nonsensical, so misguided, and so blind to reality, that only a theist could have dreamed it up. So, guess who just got ordained!

Mark Hourigan is also a sex offender. Almost a decade ago, long before he joined the flock at the City of Refuge Worship Center, he was convicted of sexually abusing an 11-year-old boy in central Kentucky. Hourigan served a five-year sentence and the 41-year-old was placed on Kentucky’s sex offender registry for the rest of his life.

“He’s still a threat” to children, said Cal Pfeiffer, who was abused by a Catholic priest as a young student in Louisville in the late 1950s and early 60s. Pfeiffer and experts on religion and sexual abuse believe it could be the first time a convicted sex offender has been knowingly ordained as a minister in a Christian church.

“It sets a precedent,” said Pfeiffer, a member of a group that has protested Hourigan’s ordination. “It elevates him to an ordained minister which almost automatically conveys a level of trust and responsibility.”

I know these people love to talk about forgiveness, but since when do theists practice what they preach?

  1. Perhaps setting aside jokes for this topic isn't appropriate. It's no laughing matter but its certainly is a laughable move (and even slap happy) on the part of the church.

  2. Wow, good luck with that one, dumbest church ever. Seriously when I saw this I thought…okay, maybe he had a jailbait girlfriend who was 15 when he was 21 or something….nope, an 11 year old. and if it was "almost a decade" ago and the guy is 41, that means he did it in his early 30s. that's about as bad as it gets, kiddy-diddling in your 30s. But hey, if his congregation is fine with it and he's served his time…as I said…good luck with that.

  3. Wow- this guy is a scumbag.

  4. Ah, that is certainly what the Christian church needs – another child molester in it's ranks. I wonder if there is a special seminary that attracts these people or they use a correspondence seminary while in prison.
